There are two men I follow every day. I'm obsessed with them. Every morning, I look at their schedule and I carve out the time in my day to make sure I meet their demands. Their structure. Their no-nonsense approach to what they love.

They are the only men I am submissive to. The only men who make it worth getting up before 5 a.m. -- even on Sundays. Especially on Sundays.

One man tells me how far to run.

For a couple of weeks now, my 6-year-old daughter has had me help her memorize the 12 Days of Christmas -- the pear tree, the geese, maids, drummers. The agony. Over and over.

Her off-key notes almost are unbearable. I stifle giggles every time, and she catches me and glares. 'Tis the season -- is it New Year's yet?

When Montgomery Advertiser reporter -- and fellow runner -- Markeshia Ricks started talking this week about the 12 Days of Running, we came up with a new song I thought I'd share with you. Instead of French hens and turtledoves, you'll get shoes. Ice. And beer.

You'll thank us. It's fun.

THE EXTRA MILE: Take advantage of technology, online support, one step at a time

When I started running again four years ago, I relied heavily on running magazines for advice and the right shoes. The Internet was used strictly for finding races.

Twitter wasn't around -- the site didn't even go live until July 2006 -- and even that didn't grab my interest, or patience, until a few months ago. Mapmyrun.com was so foreign to me I didn't see the need. Nor did I have the desire or patience. I just wanted to run, and didn't want to spend the time to "map" it on a computer.

Once I gave it a chance, though, I realized just how far technology has come.

They ask that you be there Saturday with bells on. The 2009 Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis, an annual event that raises funds for the Arthritis Foundation, draws hundreds and hundreds of runners and walkers to Huntingdon College for hours of fun.

Fun?

It’s the season for turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie and everything else we will “run off” this upcoming week.

I’m not real sure what it is about Thanksgiving that forces me to eat cheese balls, spinach dip, and absurd amounts of crackers and also to pour gravy on meat, potatoes and rolls.

And that’s just Thursday alone.
